i'm telling you, she's a real witch

Most of us don't actively try to gossip. Sometimes, our friends can annoy us or a petty argument can lead to a snide comment behind their back; even the best of us are guilty of it. In nearly all settings throughout life, drama and gossip prevail- but what causes some of us to thrive off of it? We all seem to have that one friend who always seems to know everybody's business all the time. They have "the tea" are sipping "the tea" and spilling "the tea"- an overly used moniker for drama. It's like other people's personal lives are their lifeblood. Perhaps they're just a chatty person, or they have too much free time. But chances are that whoever this person is in your life is NOT a 17th century puritan caught in the middle of a witch hunt. This may seem like an odd comparison, but your gossip loving friend and this ancient puritan probably have more in common than you think.

We've currently only reached the end of Act 1 of The Crucible in class, but we still can tell that these supposedly simple, god-fearing puritans are actually no better than a teenage girl who cant stay out of other people's business. If you need a refresher- Abigail loves John Proctor who's married to Goody proctor who's spreading "lies" about Abigail in town which actually aren't lies because Abigail's kinda crazy because she actually drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor and sort of dances naked in the woods and gets other people hung for her unintelligent ideas. Doesn't that seem like a lot? Well thats barely a glimpse of Act 1 out of 3 exciting more installments of some purely puritan drama!

However, I'm not entirely villainizing people like Goody Proctor- who's only lashing out against the woman who ended her marriage, and Abigail- the woman who ended the marriage- for reaching a breaking point where she felt it necessary to call poor Tituba up to boil a frog and dance in circles in the woods. Abigail is in love with John, and and the overly restricted life she's living could certainly lead to such a breaking point. No one's saying life as a free-thinking puritan wasn't difficult, but that's still no reason to cry witch. No matter how much drama and gossip I'd go through in my life, I can strongly assure anyone who asks that I will not drink a potion to have you killed and then accuse innocent people in my town of witchcraft. Now that's some real witchy behavior.

  1. Your comparison of a gossiping teenagers and a puritan is well thought out. The comparison shows how back in time people gossip and now which shows how some of are in way a Puritan. It also shows how even if we oppose Puritan ideas we still are in way connected and repeat history more times than we can count.
